Within government, the separation of powers is essential. The U.S. Federal Government is comprised of three branches: judicial, executive, and legislative. To maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of government, each branch has its appointed powers and roles. The branches of the U.S. government work together to provide a law that its citizens can follow, which is as fair as possible.
Legislative Branch
This branch is made up of the House and Senate, and together, they are known as the Congress. Among other things, this branch comes up with laws, declares wars against other states or countries, regulates inter-and intrastate commerce, and is in charge of taxation or other spending policies.
To pass a law, the legislative branch needs votes and when the bill gets passed, it is up to the executive branch to execute it.
The legislative branch is made up of the following branches:
- Center for Legislative Archives, National Archives and Records Administration
- Architect of the Capitol (AOC)
- S. Senate
- Congressional Budget Office (CBO)
- Office of Compliance
- Government Accountability Office (GAO)
- Library of Congress (LOC)
- Government Printing Office (GPO)
Executive Branch
In this branch, the President and his or her advisors from the various other departments and agencies work together to enforce the laws. Below is a list of the executive branch organizations and other agencies:
- Executive Office of the President (White House)
- The President’s Cabinet (Federal Agencies)
- Independent Federal Agencies and Commissions
- USAGov
- The Federal Information Center (FIC)
- USA Jobs
If the President were to veto a bill, Congress can still override his decision. If the President were to be corrupt, he could be indicted and impeached by the Senate with enough votes.
Judicial Branch
In the judicial branch, you will find the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal Judicial Center. The Federal Judicial Center functions as the education and research agency for the federal courts. The judicial branch interprets the law.
