About Martin Luther King Jr.
Born as Michael King, Jr. in January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr. was a famous social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until April 4, 1968. The cause of death: King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Martin Luther King, Jr. was fundamental to the civil rights movement which helped unify African Americans with other races in the South and other parts of the U.S. Because Martin Luther King, Jr. promoted peaceful tactics to achieve civil rights (e.g., the March on Washington in 1963), he rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Additionally, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest individual to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, at the age of 35. He even turns over the prize money (approximately $54,123) to fund the civil rights movement.

- King traveled over 6 million miles between 1957 and 1968 to conduct speeches over 2,500 times and organize peaceful protests. King was inspired by the teachings of Gandhi. For over a decade, King managed to publish many articles and wrote five books.
- King attended Boston University and received his doctorate in systematic theology in 1955. He also earned a divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
- King was awarded 20 honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the United States and across the globe. Additionally, Time Magazine named King as the ‘Man of the Year’ in 1963. He was the first African American who earned this achievement. The magazine paid tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. by publishing him on a seven-page article with his photograph on the cover.
- Although Martin Luther King, Jr. was admired by many, police officials of the past saw the civil rights leader as a threat to American security. That’s why he was arrested 29 times and assaulted four times due to civil disobedience charges. In addition, paper trails showed that the FBI had continued efforts to thwart King’s progress. The FBI intensified their investigation into King after his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.
